If you are planning to host your own workshop, seminar or live event, you need an event vision. Your event vision not only covers the look and feel of the event, but also the outcome you want for your attendees. Your event vision becomes the guiding force for your event design and you plan your other elements towards it. Your event vision brings a clarity that you can bring to your strategy. The clarity of your event vision will tell you what to make happen, the event strategy will tell you how to make it happen.
So how do you determine your event vision?
Let’s start off with the look of your event. Who are your attendees? What is your ideal target market and ideal attendee? How big is the event going to be, i.e. how many attendees do you want to have at the event? Does it look big or more intimate? What colors do you want to use? Do you want to have an elaborate stage, or do you want it to be more functional? When you imagine your event, what does it look like? Don’t focus on the hows or whats, just let your imagination run wild. If you don’t know exactly how to accomplish the look of your vision, that’s ok. That is what event designers are for and they can help you create the look you want.
Now let’s focus on the feel of your event. What do your attendees feel when they walk into the meeting room? Are they excited and full of anticipation? Does the room have a serene and calming feel to it? Does it feel lavish, or is it more business like? Does it feel like an environment that is conducive to learning? Does it feel more like a fun get together and oh by the way, we’ll do some learning as well? Remember, there is no right or wrong answer; you just have to be clear in your head of what it is you want.
The outcome that you want for your attendees is one of the most important goals to have. After all, it is what makes them come back to your events year after year, sign up for your services and purchase your products. So what do you want for your attendees? If you say, I want them to be blown away, that’s all good and well, but by what? By the great content your event delivered? By the fabulous special effects and video? By the great networking opportunities you provided? Now what do you want them to do with it? Do you want them to join your online subscriber community? Did you provide them with quick action steps they should take? Do you have a way for them to share their success stories with you and each other?
Now that you have a clear event vision, you can keep that in mind when you plan your event components. With every idea you have, ask yourself how it fits in with your vision. The more detailed your vision, the easier it becomes to plan it and to make reality. Make your vision a part of your event strategy and go make it happen!
