Talk Up Your Business

This summer, my 12 year old son participated in all kinds of sports camps. He is a soccer player, so of course soccer camps were on the agenda. He is also getting interested in basketball, and he participated in his first basketball camp.

talk up your businessWhen I listen to the coaches, they all stress one thing that is also extremely important to business owners: TALK. They encourage the kids to talk on the field and on the court as they are playing. They go as far as to suggest that if you want to make the team, the best way to impress the coaches is to communicate as you are playing. You know why? It makes you stand out!

And that is exactly what it does for business owners as well. Of course, we don’t call it talking. We call it speaking. And getting up in front of groups of potential clients builds your credibility, gives you great exposure and sometimes even an opportunity to sell your products or services at the end of your presentation. It is also a great way to build your list of subscribers.

The key to your success is to have a presentation ready that you can adapt to any length and to any audience. Your so called signature speech that zeros in on exactly the problems that you uniquely solve for your clients. You want to make sure that you hone in on your core message and nail it every time.

There are lots of groups that need speakers, so contact local networking groups, associations and other groups that share your ideal audience. Send them your speaker kit or speaker 1-sheet that promotes you and your talk. As a speaker or business owner with a message to share, you have to have your marketing materials ready and you have to know how to land those speaking gigs.

This is where many entrepreneurs get hung up. They know what they want to talk about, but are not sure exactly how to promote it. What are the words you use? What do you need to have in place to get booked as a speaker?

If you need some help with this, join my friend Susan Levin from Speaker Services at the Talk Up Your Business event in Atlanta on September 30th and October 1st. She has put together a terrific line up of speaker that will teach these strategies and so much more in depth. You will really learn how to use speaking to grow your business.

I am excited to be one of the presenters and teach you how to get butts in the seats for your own workshops and seminars as well. The early bird pricing will end soon, so check out the event.

I hope you will join me at Talk Up Your Business and find out how to master the message and master the marketing. When you register, be sure to let me know you are coming, so I can look for you at the event!

  1. Great advice from the sports coaches, Daphne!

All four of my daughters played sports in school — and they were always encouraged to “talk it up” on the field.

Having your “signature speech” ready to go at a moment’s notice is really a smart thing to do. And you’re absolutely right — lots of clubs, organizations, school PTSA’s, etc. are constantly on the lookout for guest speakers.

Have tons of fun at Susan’s event in Atlanta! I’ve been following her for a long time and she’s top notch. 🙂

Thanks, Melanie. I am excited about Talk Up Your Business. Not only because I will be presenting and meeting lots of cool new people, but especially because I will also be learning so much. I love learning new things I can share!

Wow Daphne I didn’t know that about “talking” during a soccer game! I know on the basketball court they love to talk…and I enjoyed the connection for business owners as well!

It’s really important to get out, be seen and be heard as a business owner so that your prospects and clients get a sense of who you are and how you can help them. And speaking makes such an impact, in the shortest amount of time.

Your audience for the Atlanta event is in for a REAL treat because I know the power of what you teach for creating seminars and workshops to help entrepreneurs “be seen and heard.” So break a leg, my friend!

And thanks for the soccer lesson! 🙂

Isn’t it funny? I found out that soccer and basketball are really very similar. Who knew?

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Chris. I am looking forward to practicing what I preach. Speaking is an awesome tool and one I am going to be incorporating a LOT more!
