Taking Control

As we ring in the new year, the possibilities are endless. We have a clean slate to shape our life and our businesses. Many people fill this clean slate up with new year’s resolutions.  We resolve to get rid of bad habits, to lose weight or do things differently in the new year.  Many times all these great resolutions are broken by the end of January and it is back to business as usual.

Others, like Mari Smith, set a theme for the new year. Some use only one word, others use a phrase.  I have heard of some who want to get out of their comfort zone in the new year, others want personal growth.  I like setting a theme for the new year.  You can do so much with it.  It can fit your business and your personal life.

Ever since I saw Mari’s blog post, I have been mulling over my word for 2011.  I couldn’t think of any.  Actually, that is not true.  I thought of many words, but none that felt right. But today, on January 1st, I have settled on a word.  That word is CONTROL.

This year is the year I am taking control. Taking control of my life, my time, my finances and my kids. It isn’t that my life is out of control, far from it.  But you know how sometimes things get away from you?  It certainly happens to me. So in 2011 I am taking control.

Taking control of my timeI am taking control of my time.  Time tends to get away from me as I chase the next shiny object, or go down that treacherous social media rabbit hole. No more.  I am planning my projects and my days.  The other reason that it is so important to control my time is that I need more time to control my kids.  (Haha!) No joking, I never knew how hard it was to keep a 6th grader organized. It could be a full time job for some one.  6th grade sure was a lot easier the first time around.

I am also taking control of my finances, revenues coming in and expenses going out.  Especially the part about paying yourself first.  Thankfully, Sandra Martini just ran her Countdown to 2011 Celebration.  She gave out 12 gifts on the last 12 days of 2010.  Among those gifts were some great spreadsheets that I will use to keep track of my revenue on a daily basis. Her sales and marketing report spreadsheet is also pure gold for someone who is taking control. Thanks, Sandy!  Her gifts are available until 5pm ET on January 3rd, so hurry over to http://www.countdownto2011.com and snap up your goodies.

I wish you health, happiness and prosperity in 2011. And of course many successful workshops, seminars and events! What is your theme for 2011? Do you have one word like Mari Smith, or a phrase, like my friend Chris Makell? Share it in the comments and we can keep each other accountable.
