In the second of this blog post series about event relationships, I am asking the question:

Who do you know who could speak at your seminar?

Public SpeakingIt is hard to carry a multi day event all by yourself.  No matter how energetic you are, even you need a break.  Not only does adding another presenter or presenters give you a much needed rest from talking, good speakers, with great content, add value to your event.

Your attendees will love hearing a different voice and learning from another perspective.  Attending a three day seminar is hard work too and different speakers break up the day for your attendees. Don’t get too many speakers.  One guest speaker per day is a good rule of thumb.  After all, your attendees signed up to see you, not a line up of guest speakers. (Unless you billed it as such.)

Be sure to choose someone whose topic of expertise ties in with yours, without competing with it.  It is also important that your speakers deliver good content and not just a pitch for their latest program. Of course it is perfectly acceptable for your guest speakers to make an offer, but the focus should be on high quality information.

And the best part?  You get to share in the revenue of your guest speakers’ sales.

    Is it a standard matter of protocol to pay your seminar guest speakers for doing a presentation? And have you ever had any guest speakers who presented valuable information to your audience “minus” the sales pitch?

      Excellent question, Melanie. There are 2 models of speaking at seminars. And sometimes they will both be used at the same event. Keynote speakers deliver motivational speeches at events, meetings and seminars. They generally get paid for their work and they do not make any offers. Yes, they do present valuable information, but it is generally more motivational.

      Then there are those who sell from the platform. You have some of them that tell stories and if you want to actually learn something, you have to buy their product. Yuck! I hate those kinds of speakers. They just tease…

      Then there are the those that deliver tremendous value, really teach something and make an offer. Those are the gems! The key is that they make an offer. That does not mean they make a sales pitch. I believe there is a big difference in making a sales pitch and giving the people who are listening to you the opportunity to take the next step if they wish.

      I do have seen guest speakers deliver tremendous value and not make an offer (or a sales pitch for that matter). And that makes me sad. Because that means that they are letting those attendees who may be ready for more, hanging. They can’t take the next step and many times they don’t know what the next step is, so they won’t ask for it either. You don’t know what you don’t know, right?

      That is why I think it is vital to make an offer. If you are not allowed to sell, give. Do a drawing for one of your products or give away an ebook and a subscription to your newsletter in exchange for a survey or feedback form. That way you can stay in touch with them and give them the next step after the seminar.

  3. I appreciate your detailed answer in explaining the different formats as I think they confuse some attendees who feel they’re being asked to spend more money at an event. It also ties in beautifully with a speaker training I recently completed on the primary differences between being a Keynote Speaker and being a Guest Speaker.

    I’ve attended live events where the speakers really gave value in their presentations and then gave attendees an opportunity to continue learning from them at a special rate and even if you can’t commit at the time, you’ve heard their presentation, know they deliver or even over-deliver and how you can connect with them when you ready.

    Agree with you on the yuck! for those who make it all about a sales pitch.
