If you want to host your own workshops and seminars, it is vitally important to learn how to market your events yourself. One of my mentors, Adam Urbanski says it best. He says that you are in two businesses. You are in the business of marketing your services first and delivering your services second. Let’s face it, without clients we don’t have a business. The same goes for your workshops and seminars.
It is a different mindset. When you decide you want to host your own event, you are in the business of marketing your event first and delivering your workshop second. Without attendees, you do not have an event. And you can get the butts in the seats of your event, authentically, without any sleaze and manipulation.
Since I am an expert in marketing your businesses with workshops and seminars, I have many people come to me that want to hire me to fill their workshop room.
Although I am happy to consult on their marketing, put a marketing plan together and work with my clients to get those butts in the seats, I am not a proponent of just abdicating your marketing duties, and I will give you 3 reasons why.
Reason # 1 – Marketing is a revenue generating activity
It is the lifeblood of your business and with workshops, it is the lifeblood of your event. As business owners we have to focus on the revenue generating activities. When we deliver our services, our expenses start. Remember that, when we do the marketing and sales, the money comes in. When we deliver our services, or in this case, plan our event, the money goes out. If you want to outsource, you should outsource the planning part (expenses), and keep control of the marketing (revenue).
Reason #2 – No one knows your business as well as you.
No one has the same passion for your business that you have. You are the one who listens to your clients and understands their problems. You are the one who can answer their biggest questions. And you can provide the solution to what keeps them up at night.
Reason # 3 – Do you really want to hand over your brand, your reputation, your business to someone else?
I recently had someone come to me and they said that they had a telemarketing company approach them and told them they would fill the workshop room for 50% of the ticket sales. As a service provider the only thing you have is your reputation. People only do business with you because they know, like and trust you. Don’t put that in jeopardy, because you don’t really know how to put the butts in the seats yourself.
Bonus – Results, results, results
The problem with getting telemarketing firms to “fill” your workshop is that they don’t care who they fill the room with. It is not just about getting warm bodies in the room. It is about getting the right attendees in the room. The right attendees will have better results with what you teach. And better results for them mean more success stories, and more clients.
