I have a secret fear that has ruled my life.  Yet instead of trying to conquer this fear, I embrace it.  The fear? Being average.  Just the thought of being average has me breaking out in a cold sweat.

Sure I went through my adolescent “fitting in” stage, but I was never average, since I was already competing internationally on the Dutch National Diving Team.

In college I was above average, graduating Cum Laude with a below average amount of effort, since I spend most of my time in the pool and competing.  In things like bowling and drawing, I am not just below average, I am TERRIBLE!  Needless to say, I don’t spend a lot of time on them, since I don’t want to settle for average.

As I began my career, I thirsted for knowledge, wanting to know every aspect of the event industry.  I sold tickets, sponsorships, planned logistics, created marketing campaigns, did public relations and found out about monetization strategies.

I worked for a major sporting event, a non-profit, government, AV company, production company and a hotel.  All along the way getting the experience that gives me way above average knowledge of events.

If you are an entrepreneur, settling for average is the fastest way of going out of business.  You have to stand out head and shoulders above the rest, so that people are drawn to you and you don’t get lost among the crowd.  Here are three tips to get to escape the average.

Narrow Your Focus

Be very specific about the problem that you solve and the people you solve them for.  If you want to be too many things to too many people, you will spread yourself too thin and blend into the crowd.  It is better to be the Go-To expert in a narrow field than be one of the many in a more general field.  The narrower your focus, the easier it is to stand head and shoulders above the rest.

Claim Your Expertise

If you have specific knowledge, own it.  Claim your expertise by writing articles, reports, hosting teleseminars and webinars and hosting your own events.  These can be introductory workshops that establish your credibility and generate leads or longer seminars that share more of your in depth knowledge and generate big revenue.

Never stop learning

Even with all your expertise, there are certain areas that need more work to be above average.  I am determined to master all aspects of my business, including all the internet marketing strategies and yes, the technology as well.  I want to know what works and what doesn’t.  I want to know the latest strategies and how to get my registration pages from average return to above average return.  I want to know that when I outsource something, I can tell excellent from average and get better returns in below average time.
