On Tuesday, the Netherlands will have a new king.  Prince Willem-Alexander will be inaugurated on April 30th, as the Dutch don’t do coronations. Since the Netherlands have had only queens since King Willem III died in 1890, there had been much speculation about the name the new king would take.

Willem IV and Bertha 38?

Would the new king be known as King Willem IV?  The answer became a resounding “No”, as Prince Willem-Alexander stated in a recent interview that Willem IV spends its time in the pasture with Bertha 38, referring to the many cows that dot the Dutch landscape.

Some other comments that would have certain other monarchies definitely perturbed are that he really doesn’t care how people address him. He wants them to be comfortable around him, because he doesn’t have a “protocol fetish”.

The overreaching factor with this king is that he is true to himself.  Even with his responsibilities, he understands that he can only do his job and be happy if he is authentic.  That genuineness is what endears him to the public, both in the Netherlands and abroad.

This is also true for us entrepreneurs.  It is much too difficult to play a role and to be someone that you are not.  Being authentic is huge requirement for being successful.

If you are not, your audience will sense it in your content and your marketing.  If you are wondering why your marketing isn’t working, that could be a contributing factor.

And face it: playing a role on a day to day basis is exhausting!  How can you stand in front of an audience, teaching them for hours while not being yourself?  And more importantly, how can you look yourself in the mirror?

Be Authentic

Being authentic and sharing your story will draw the right audience to you.  You will get people to know, like and trust you and that is what turns your audience into clients.

Whether you are a king or an entrepreneur, there is one overreaching factor that’s important in our lives.  You have to be true to yourself.
