Ever had one of those days that you just want to throw in the towel? Hide under the covers? Wonder what you are doing it all for?
As an entrepreneur, I have no doubt that you have had a day (or 2) like that. If you host your own events, you might have a few more than that.
Unfortunately, being an entrepreneur and frustration go hand in hand.
Confession time: The last week has been like that for me. It happens when you want so much and then technology doesn’t cooperate and you are left frustrated. You try something else, nothing. Again… nope. Aargh!
It is easy to give up and do something else. You may think about canceling your event or getting a job.
As throwing in the towel fleetingly crossed my mind the other day, I was reminded of my diving days. I didn’t become an Olympic diver by giving up when a dive went wrong. Unfortunately, almost every time I was learning a new dive, it was scary and painful.
At first, the dive wasn’t very good and it always took a few bad smacks. And after every crash, I would have to get right back up on the diving board to try it again. The saying about getting right back upon that horse also counts for diving boards. If you think a horse is scary, try standing on a diving board ready to throw your body into a whirl of somersaults.
Only after a few painful crashes would I start to control the dive. It takes time to build muscle memory and the confidence that comes with controlling your own destiny. Or landing a dive in this case.
Once I had control, I could work on perfecting the dive. It took many repetitions, discipline and figuring out what went wrong and what I did right.
Right now, I am working to control the webinar technology, so that I can deliver the perfect educational webinars.
Perseverance, control and perfection (or something close to it) brought me to the Olympic Games. Perseverance, control and perfection will bring me a webinar without technical difficulties. Because it WILL happen!
Remember, no one ever said it would be easy. If it were easy, everyone would be doing it!
You may feel the same way about hosting events. It can be frustrating at times, and if you have tried to run an event without a strategy or marketing support, it can be downright painful.
But don’t give up. Persevere. Ask for help. Once you have control, you can perfect.
